Has anyone had success with relationship counseling?

My bf of a year suggested relationship counseling because we’ve been arguing in circles. We are stressed out. He is about to graduate with a computer science degree. With his internship, job interviews out of state, and school work he is SO stressed. He seems to think that he’s cramping my plan of getting married and starting a family. He’s really not, but no matter how much I tell him he’s not he doesn’t believe me. I would love to hear some relationship counseling success stories! Thanks!

Congratulations, it sounds like your boyfriend cares enough about your relationship to try to get some help and make it stronger! The best way to see how hard a person will “work” on his/her marriage is the way he/she “works” before marriage.

My wife and I took over 40 hours of premarital counseling, premarital classes, and hundreds of dollars on premarital tests. They were worth every minute and penny. You can never, and I do mean never, know enough about a person. Now, I may be biased because I am a counselor, but when two people make the most of it, relationship counseling is invaluable.

It is difficult to do ourselves because of something psychologists call “blind spots.” They are parts about ourselves that we cannot see. Everyone has them and a counselor can help you both work them out. A counselor is usually objective so it makes sense, right?

Finally, everyone goes for routine maintenance for cars, etc, so why would they not go for routine relationship maintenance?
